Spring Bento!
April 16, 2010
Spring is bento box season! Stores put out their bento box and bento accessory inventory in time for all of the hanami picnics. This year, I added a Totoro lunchbox to my collection of cuteness. ^_^
Also, just for fun, I made this lunch last weekend. Initially I wanted to make a kyaraben (Character bento), but alas, I ended up being too hungry to put the time and effort into such a detailed lunch. This simple bento includes rice, sweet Awaji onions, tofu and pork hash, carrots, and scrambled egg.

Mmmm! What’s a hanami picnic?
Hanami happens around this time every year… it’s when people go to look at the sakura blossoms!~ ^_^ People love going for a picnic, sitting under the beautiful trees with the blossoms falling from the trees like snow! Also, I think beer sales pick up around this time; I’ve seen sooo many beer commercials on TV since last month!
There’s a funny expression that the Japanese use: Hanami yori dango, which means “Dango over flowers”. Dango, mochi dumplings on a skewer, is a popular snack food. It just implies that some people get really excited about hanami, for the flowers, of course, but mostly for the snacks and bentos!!
